Lonely Planet: Europe on a Shoestring
Covers 40 countries. Catering to the backpacker market, it's produced by a team of experienced travel writers and offers a wider perspective than the American offering above. The broader mix of historical background, orientation and practical information is welcome. A good all round guide, though not as inventive as they market as being. Still, it is one of the best general purpose guides out there. Covers all of Western Europe as an`all in oneŽ guide.
Let's Go Europe is the best selling of all the euro guidebooks, covers all the main countries you're likely to visit and has been around for over 20 years. Often referred to as the bible of
budget travel it's compiled by a group of some 30 Harvard students who collect details on a tour of Europe the summer prior to publication. Its main strengths are the emphasis on value for money and nightlife. Follow the Let's Go 'bible' and you'll not be far from the party crowd, particularly the American party crowd, if for no other reason than everyone else is reading it too!

Rick Steves' Europe through the Back Door: The Travel Skills Handbook for Independent Travelers
Rick Steves effectively explains his budget travel strategy. This book is an easy read and you'll find it hard to put down if you have any interest at all in visiting Europe. The philosophy Rick calls "back door" means frequenting place and sites as the locals do--not only to save money, but to experience the culture. Because his books are popular, many lodgings are usually full and some people are less than thrilled with his lodging recommendations, but his overall advice is sound.
